Weight loss is not about reaching a goal weight…that’s what you’ve been conditioned to believe. Thanks, diet culture. The hard truth is that chasing a goal weight and a deadline are exactly what’s keeping you stuck on the yo-yo diet/body hate shame cycle. What is weighing a specific number really gonna for you? How is that supposed to magically cure all of your problems? Is a number going to give you automatic happiness?

News Flash: It won’t. I know that from experience. Reaching goal weight for the sake of saying you weigh 150 lbs (example) is not going to cure your anxiety, your money problems, your shitty relationship, your lack of confidence, your fat girl mindset, or your anxiety and fear around food.

Weight Loss Is Not About Reaching a Goal Weight

When you really think about losing your weight, it’s not a number your after. It’s a feeling.

  • You want to feel less anxious and fearful around food.
  • You want to feel excited and happy and not rely on food for your sole source of entertainment
  • You want to feel comfortable in your own skin.
  • You want to feel confident without worrying who is staring at you…thinking you’re too fat.
  • You want to wake up and feel energized. Not dreading the day before your feet even hit the floor.
  • You want to feel like you’re living life to the fullest.
Think about your future self. Think about how she wants to FEEL. That’s how you need to set your goals. You have to lose more than just the weight. Think about what you really need to lose:
  • Low self esteem
  • BS excuses
  • Fat girl mindset
  • All or nothing mindset
  • Negativity
  • Bad habits
  • Soothing yourself with food
  • Putting yourself last

Setting a goal weight with a hard core deadline is a form of self sabotage.  It gives you an out when it doesn’t work…and you’ve already convinced yourself that it’s never going to work before you begin.  If you only focus on the number, and you don’t do the work to lose the emotional weight while the scale is going down, you’ll be right back on the yo-yo diet hamster wheel in no time.
