“The most basic of all human needs is the need to understand and be understood. The best way to understand people is to listen to them.”
~Ralph Nichols~
I love this quote. As human beings, we are complex creatures. But, at our very core we are actually really simple.
Did you ever realize how fulfilling it is when somebody takes interest in what interests you and really engages with you about it? It just feels good. It empowers and inspires you to do more. It makes you feel like you can do it no matter what challenges may come along. It feels like you have your own cheering team! They listened and HEARD you.
When you don’t have that, it sucks. It’s lonely. It’s nice to have people that you know believe in you.
You know they believe in you because they listen to your goals, your dreams, and what you are doing to get there. They offer advice and feedback.
Often times, we are our own worst enemy. We catch ourselves beating ourselves up with negative self talk. When there’s nobody that’s interested to listen, it’s more challenging and difficult to shut yourself up when that starts.
If nobody is listening when you talk, how do you get their attention? How do you keep yourself focused and accountable? After all, at the end of the day, it is up to YOU to make it all happen. Nobody else.
This is so true. When I get a chance to discuss what I’m passionate about with someone who really listens and is then encouraging, I feel like I could conquer the world!
I love the listen/silent quote – always something important to remember!

So true! People need to feel like your listening, which is why eye contact is so important. In a world of text messaging and social networks, we often forget that the people sitting right in front of us are just as important, if not more important than our cyber friends.
Visiting here from LBS! Have a great week!
