This is the #IrresistibleYou podcast episode that’s going to offend the shit out of so many nutritionists and health professionals. Do I care? NO. Why? This episode isn’t for them. This episode is for my girls that feel this message in their soul and in their bones. That know what it’s like to be looked at differently because of their weight. The ones that have been called the “fat girl.” The girls that know what it’s like to be shamed for their weight by so called health professionals.
Listen. I know some amazing, compassionate nutritionists IRL. This isn’t about them. This is about the ones that are part of the problem. The ones that continue to stir the virtual shit pot of obesity, emotional eating, binge eating, and all the shame and guilt smothered on top.
Recently, I had an…let’s say indecent with a health professional in regards to GRAPES. Fucking grapes.
I went in for a one month checkup and I was down 7 pounds and 1 inch off my waist. She was asking what I’d been eating to lose weight. I started to blabber on and then I said the worst thing I could possibly say.
I’ve been eating grapes as a snack. Never in my life have I’ve eaten grapes. Now at 30 something years old, I discovered there’s a new fruit I actually enjoy! #Shocker
That’s when I was interrupted mid-sentence by the pretentious, condescending tone that gave me flash backs to elementary school days.
She proceeded to tell me that grapes are not a good choice because they are chock full of sugar.
That’s where things get interesting. I recorded a podcast episode where I let it rip. It’s raw, unedited, and ZERO sugar coating.
I’ve had it with this bullshit from so-called health professionals. You’re not better than me because you have a bunch of fucking letters after your name. Have you walked a day in my shoes? Do you know what it’s like to be a recovered binge eater who spent her entire life hating her body and then using the one thing that made her fat to cope? I doubt it.
Do you know what it’s like to actually fucking love yourself now? Do you know the amount of work that took and that it still take on a daily basis? Do you know what depression and anxiety feel like? Do you know what it’s like to actually get panic attacks when you try to leave your house? To throw your comfy pants on and stuff your face for hours to numb the pain? Do you know what that feels like? Or are you so fucking concerned with the government nutrition charts and shaming me for eating…for fucks sake: FRUIT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I can handle myself in these situations (now…not years ago) but I get fiercely protective of the girls that haven’t done the work I’ve done through Irresistible You. I know that something like this can break you and send you spiraling into a binge eating shame shit storm. I know how DAMAGING this is to the root problem. This black and white, all or nothing thinking IS part of the problem.
BMI charts and health professionals that don’t take the human…emotional element into what they’re doing? They are getting it all wrong. They are just as dangerous as the bullshit 6 week diet plans plastered all over the checkout lines.
I may not be a dietitian, nutritionist, or a health professional. But, I sure as shit know what it’s like to walk in your shoes. I used to own those shoes, girl! Do I eat perfectly? Nope. Not trying to anyways. Do I eat better than I did most of my life? Hell yes! Am I on a weight loss journey WITHOUT hating myself? You bet! Am I losing weight? Um, yup. 60 lbs as of today to be exact. Slowest I’ve ever lost it but guess what? Not once has it come back. That’s because I stopped focusing on stupid diets and restricting foods…you know, foods that are actually healthy like grapes. I’ve learned how to stop binge eating, how to eat in moderation, while loving myself and appreciating my body now…not only when I get to goal weight.
