Most of the time, I talk about body image, weight, and emotional eating. One of my guiding principles of an irresistible life is “break the rules.” This week, I celebrated my 37th birthday on July 30th. Yea, Leo season baby! So, today I’m talking about how to break the rules while aging.
Secret: To all of you reading that are young and in your 20’s. You WILL be here one day too. We are all getting older day-by-day.
As I do with every birthday, I tend to reflect on the past, lessons learned, and what I want to accomplish in the coming year. I think that’s a lot more powerful than new year’s resolutions.
How To Break the Rules While Aging
Aging also brings up a lot of issue with our appearance, body image, and confidence. It’s been drilled into us for years that there are just certain things you’re supposed to stop (or start) doing once you hit a certain age. I call bullshit. In this post, I go over five ways you can break the rules when it comes to aging and getting older.
1. Go Clubbing or Stay Home. Just Do You, Boo.
I spent all of my 20’s living for the weekend at the club. I’ve always loved getting dressed up, grabbing drinks, and dancing the night away. As I got older, I started going out less because I had other priorities and I just didn’t love it as much. These days with an almost 2 year old, clubbing is no longer something I actively do…but I still enjoy it but only on occasion. Society will tell you that you need to stop going out and having fun. If your idea of fun isn’t clubbing, that’s ok. I love that my husband and I can still hang with the best of them on a random occasion that we have a child-free night.
In the podcast, I share a funny story about how sometimes I want to go to the club and other nights I just want to wear comfy pants and watch 90 Day Fiancé on the couch. Either way is fine. It doesn’t matter. Just do you, boo.
2. Wear What You Want
You know those fashion rules that say you shouldn’t wear things based on age? Or that you should cut your hair? Through all of those rules away. Sure, I’d feel really stupid wearing certain things I wore a few years ago but I’m not going to change my style because of a bullshit “fashion rule” by a self proclaimed expert. I’ll change only because I want to!
3. It’s Never Too Late
I remember being like 23 and saying I would retire by 30. Um, bitch please. Is that possible? Hmm, maybe. Sure. But only if you set a plan and go after it intentionally. I didn’t do that. I wasn’t all that serious about that goal. It was just a “thing” I would say.
So then you get to the age you said you’d do XYZ by and you feel like a failure. Well, you’re not. Just know that it’s never too late to go after your dreams and become who you are meant to be. Don’t let your age hold you back.
4. Don’t Feed The Trolls
I can honestly say that I’m at a place where I couldn’t care less what people…especially what trolls have to say about me. Their opinion means nothing to me. When we are younger in our teens and 20’s, we overly obsess about what everyone thinks of us. As I have gotten older, I just don’t care. I don’t care what someone thinks of me in a bathing suit. I don’t care if someone doesn’t like what I have to say. I only care what a small number of people think and those are people I truly love and that love me. Don’t feed the damn trolls!
5. Find Your Voice and Use It!
I am an introverted person and was a painfully shy child. As I get older and more sure of myself, I am using my voice more and more. I’m able to do this because of what we talked about in #4. I don’t care what trolls have to say. It’s also because my beliefs and opinions have become more solid as I learn who I am and the type of world I want to live in and the people I want to surround myself with. As women, we need to stand up and use our voice! Don’t let anyone silence you or make you feel less than for your opinions.
