Let’s talk about confidence. It’s the most irresistible thing a woman can wear but it’s not easy to find. You can’t go to the store or search on Amazon for it. Confidence is more complicated than that. It’s not something that you always have once you find it. You can’t read a self-help book and automatically be confident. You can be on top of the world today and tomorrow you can feel totally deflated and robbed of your confidence. I think of confidence as any other part of self care. It’s something you need to do every single day . . . just like showering.
One of my core beliefs is that you can be irresistible at any weight, size, or age. One of my guiding principles of an irresistible life is to make confidence your queen. So what do you do when you’re not feeling confident about your body? How do you push through?
When I started on my journey, I could barely walk without feeling heavy and winded. I started exercising anyways. The more I exercised, the better I felt. The better I felt, the more confidence I had to try different things. One thing led to another and I ran two 5K’s, went skiing, hot air ballooning, biking, and found a passion in kayaking. The old me would have NEVER even considered doing those things.
The more active I got, the more my quality of life improved. The depression started to melt away. I was less anxious. I felt calm and happy. All of those things snowballed my confidence which spilled over into other areas of my life. As simple as it sounds, just start. One small step at a time.
Accept that Setbacks Will Happen & Move Forward
I often say on this blog that there’s no such thing as a magical before and after story. Confidence and body acceptance is something that I have to work at every single day. This journey doesn’t come without setbacks. I’m going through a big one right now.
As you know, I had a baby six months ago and I gained 70 lbs. I’ve got about 30 lbs left to lose just to get back to my pre-pregnancy weight. There are days when I feel on top of the world, killing it at the gym, making healthy choices, and liking what I see in the mirror. Then, BOOM, out of nowhere the next day I’m disgusted with myself. I feel defeated that I have to lose this weight AGAIN. How many is it times now?
The difference between now and when I was at my highest weight is that I understand this is about more than just weight. It’s a mind-body-soul process. Even though I’ve had a setback, I’m still pushing through because I know how good the other side feels for me. I need to live an active lifestyle in order to be my optimal self and in order to live that active lifestyle, I need to be strong and healthy.
Be prepared for setbacks but don’t let them stop you from moving forward.
Show Up Every Single Day“Confidence is like a muscle: the more you use it, the stronger it gets.” Click To Tweet
I hated running as a kid. I always failed the Presidential Fitness running test in PE. A few years ago, my friend and I decided to do the couch to 5K to prepare to run our first 5K. It was hell in the beginning. But guess what? I showed up three days a week at the crack of dawn because we made a commitment to each other and ourselves. The more I did it, the easier it became. At the same time, my confidence was blooming and getting stronger. Even when it’s uncomfortable, show up and do the work.
Get Your Glam On
You are not going to feel irresistible every day. You’re not going to love every part of your body and that’s ok. I’m a big believer in accentuating what you do love. Wearing a full face of makeup, high heels, and jewelry makes me feel irresistible. Find what works for you and get your glam on! I’m a big believer that if you take care of yourself on the outside, the inside will catch up and start to believe it too.
