They helped me to identify some of the reasons why I was using food as a coping mechanism. While you may not relate to everything in these books, it helps to open your eyes to other experiences and points of view. After all, isn’t that the beauty of reading?

When Food Is Love

Geneen Roth is the queen of emotional eating recovery books. Her book When Food Is Love: Exploring the Relationship Between Eating and Intimacy is a must read especially if you are just starting out on your journey. This book will help you think about how food has become a substitute for something in your life. Geneen shares her personal experiences in addition to stories from participants in her seminars. I always find that healing truly comes from hearing other people’s stories. This book digs into the root issues of emotional eating. I highly recommend this book to help you start pinpointing WHY you are emotionally eating.

Breaking Free from Emotional Eating

Breaking Free from Emotional Eating is another gem from Geneen Roth. This book explores strategies for how to stop emotional eating. The book covers how to start listening to your body and recognizing the signals of physical hunger. She talks a lot about intuitive eating. I don’t agree with everything about intuitive eating and scale-free living but it’s worth reading to understand different points of view.  Even Oprah said this was “A life-changing book.”

Women Food and God

Do you notice a pattern here? Women Food and God is yet again another book by Geneen Roth. This one is deep. “Geneen starts with her most basic concept: the way you eat is inseparable from your core beliefs about being alive. Your relationship with food is an exact mirror of your feelings about love, fear, anger, meaning, transformation and, yes, even God.” Whoa! Who knew it was that serious? I thought I just liked to indulge on icing.

Food: The Good Girl’s Drug

Food: The Good Girl’s Drug: How to Stop Using Food to Control Your Feelings is written by Sunny Sea Gold who has been fighting binge eating disorder since her teenage years. Another good read because she’s been there. She also shares stories from other women and professionals in binge eating recovery. I’m a girl that likes action and strategies. This book not only shares personal stories . . . there are action plans and questions to ask yourself.

It’s Not About Food

It’s Not about Food: End Your Obsession with Food and Weight by Carol Emery Normandi & Laurelee Roark, the founders of Beyond Hunger. I like the Ten Principles of Beyond Hunger that they share at the beginning of the book. I love their concept of physical body, emotional body, and the spirit. It is SO true. ALL of these things have to be addressed if you want actual change. 

The Gifts of Imperfection

This is not an emotional eating book but everyone dealing with emotional eating needs to read The Gift of Imperfections by Brene Brown. This book is about how to embrace your imperfections and recognize that you’re enough. Not enough . . . isn’t that at the root of emotional eating? This book really struck a nerve with me and I have read almost all of Brene Brown’s books. I love her!

Such a Pretty Fat

I absolutely adore Jen Lancaster the author of Such a Pretty Fat. ALL of her books are a must-read. They are hilarious with a dose of reality.  This is written in memoir style. Jen is hilarious, sarcastic, and I swear we could be best friends. I immediately related to her because she has struggled with weight and diets her whole life. This book is right up my alley with my philosophy on creating an irresistible life. Jen decides to ditch all the diets and start making better choices including living life and being happy. You have to read this if you deal with emotional eating issues!

It Was Me All Along

It Was Me All Along is a memoir written by blogger Andie Mitchell. I have always been inspired by Andie’s story as she’s lost and kept off 135 lbs. The book dives into her life starting at childhood where her relationship with food started. She shares vulnerable and personal stories from throughout her life and I commend her courage. It’s more than just her journey to lose weight . . .it’s her journey to full self acceptance.

I Got This by Jennifer Hudson

I Got This: How I Changed My Ways and Lost What Weighed Me Down by Jennifer Hudson is another must read!  I always loved Jennifer’s music but I fell in love with her when she became a Weight Watchers spokesperson. In the book she shares her early stories of struggles with her body which makes her even more likeable. In I Got This, she’ll show you how she embraced Weight Watchers as a realistic, healthy way of life and helps anyone who has ever suffered from a weight problem to do the same.
